Today we look at the Highest Partnership in IPL by wicket. Any cricket fan will know how important a good partnership is. The team could on the verge of losing but a good partnership can change that. Building a good partnership also increases the confidence between the two batters, as they know the other player’s style and can build their game from there. Therefore, without any further delay let’s swiftly move into this article.
Highest Partnership in IPL
1st Wicket: JONNY BAIRSTOW AND DAVID WARNER 185 RUNS
For the 1st wicket, we have the Sunrisers opening pair. Their destruction came against RCB in 2019. Bairstow scored 114 and Warner 100 not out. Their brilliant partnership allowed them to take home the victory. They won the game by a mammoth 118 runs. Both of them combined hit 12 sixes and 17 fours.
2nd Wicket: VIRAT KOHLI AND AB DE VILLIERS 229 RUNS
Next, we have Batman and Robin (you can decide who is who). When both Virat and AB are on the crease you know destruction is going to happen. Their 229 run partnership is also the highest when compared with all the wickets. In this match, AB scored 129 not out and Virat 109. Because of their outstanding partnership, they were able to put a mammoth on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, Gujarat couldn’t emulate the performances of these two legends, and they lost the game by 144 runs. 2016 was a good year for RCB and Virat. RCB finished second in the tournament and Virat scored 4 centuries in that tournament, taking home the orange cap.
3rd Wicket: CAMERON WHITE AND KUMAR SANGAKKARA 157 RUNS
After both their openers got out, Cameron White and Kumar Sangakkara, managed to add 157 runs in the third wicket. White’s 74 followed by Sangakkara’s blazing 82 allowed to put a respectable 186 on the scoreboard. Combined they hit six sixes and fourteen fours. The partnership was pure class, as both, the batsmen showed incredible maturity to put up this score. This is one of the reasons why a good partnership is very important.
4th Wicket: SHIMRON HETMYER AND GURKEERAT SINGH MAAN 144 RUNS
Another RCB duo, this time it’s Hetmyer and Gurkeerat Singh. After the top order collapsed against a strong SRH bowling lineup. Hetmyer and Gurkeerat Singh batted brilliantly to bring the victory back to Bangalore. Hetmyer scored 75 in just 45 balls and Gurkeerat scored 65 in 48 balls. Combined they hit seven sixes and twelve fours. Their partnership was absolutely brilliant to watch, it almost looked like Gayle and Kohli were batting.
5th Wicket: SHAKIB AL HASAN AND YUSUF PATHAN 134 RUNS
After the top order completely failed, Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al Hasan batted brilliantly through the middle overs to put up a respectable total on the board. Shakib scored 66 and Pathan scored 63. However, their brilliance was not enough, as Gujarat Lions chased down the target and won the match by 5 wickets. Combined they hit 5 sixes and 11 fours.
6th Wicket: AMBATI RAYUDU AND KIERON POLLARD 122 RUNS
After big players like Tendulkar, Gibbs, Sharma got out cheaply, Rayudu and Pollard took it on their shoulders and carried Mumbai to victory. At one point the match looked completely out of Mumbai Indian’s hands, however, Pollard’s 52 and Rayudu’s brilliant 81 brought the game back into Mumbai’s hands. They hit a combined 7 sixes and 11 fours. Mumbai won the game by 5 wickets.
7th Wicket: HARBHAJAN SINGH AND JAGADEESHA SUCHITH 100 RUNS
Even though Mumbai lost this game, the partnership between Harbhajan Singh and Jagadeesha Suchith must be lauded. They managed to score 100 on the 7th wicket. Singh finished the match with a brilliant 64, while Suchith managed to score 34. Their innings brought about some hope for the Mumbai fans. After their entire batting lineup had collapsed, Singh and Suchith showed character and tried to take Mumbai over the line, however they lost the game by just 18 runs.
8th Wicket: BRAD HODGE AND JAMES FAULKNER 69 RUNS
The late heroics from Hodge and Faulkner wasn’t enough to see home the victory. After Mumbai put a respectable 178 on the scoreboard, the Rajasthan Batsmen failed to do any damage. Hodge and Faulkner put up a decent fight. They added 69 runs in the 8th wicket, but by that time the game was long gone. However, their perseverance and determination must be applauded.
9th Wicket: SAM CURRAN AND IMRAN TAHIR 43 RUNS
Again the heroics from Curran and Tahir were too late to save CSK. The batsmen fully crumbled Boult’s bowling. Because of Curran and Tahir, they were able to put 114 on the scoreboard. Mumbai won the game by 10 wickets.
10th Wicket: TOM CURRAN AND ANKIT RAJPOOT 31 RUNS
The last ad final names in the list are, Tom Curran and Ankit Rajpoot. This was against KKR, and when a team’s lower order has to bat the longest, it becomes clear that the match is long gone. This was the case for Rajasthan. Tom Curran scored a brilliant 50, but that wasn’t enough to get them the victory.
These are the highest partnership by the wicket. Maybe we can see another ABD-Virat special in the upcoming IPL, lets keep our fingers crossed.
