10 wicket victories in Cricket are a rarity, almost as rare as Cristiano Ronaldo missing a penalty or Lionel Messi not scoring a goal. In such a victory, the batsmen truly showcase their fine hitting skills, once you get that momentum there is no stopping, very recently we saw, Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal flex their muscles in a 10 wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals, and you cannot deny the fact that you were totally entertained.
However, what is more, impressive is teams that won a game by such a margin more than once. In total, teams have won a match in IPL without losing a wicket 15 times, and let’s see who are the Real Madrid, or Barcelona’s of IPL, who achieved such a feat.
RCB HAS DONE IT AGAIN!….. TEAMS WITH THE MOST 10 WICKET VICTORIES IN IPL
Royal Challengers Bangalore-4:
I don’t think anyone of us is surprised to see RCB on this list. For many years, RCB had and still has one of the most feared batting lineups in IPL. There was a time when their batting lineup consisted of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, ABD, KL Rahul, and there have been plenty more big-hitting men who have donned the red jersey. As mentioned, just recently, against Rajsthan Royals, we saw a young Devdutt Padikkal, play like vintage Chris Gayle, I mean some of the shots he played were absolutely insane.
He was very righty supported by his captain at the other end. RCB has won by a 10 wicket margin, a record 4 times. 4 times they have destroyed their opposition without losing a single wicket. Their biggest 10 wicket victory was very surprisingly against Rajsthan itself in the 2012 edition of the tournament, where, Rajasthan got all put for 92, and Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey finished the job for RCB in just 10 over.
Chennai Super Kings-2:
Chennai Super Kings may not have a feared and demolishing batting lineup as RCB, but we have seen what their batsmen can do. In the match against RCB, it wasn’t their well-established batsmen who did the job, in fact, it was Ravindra Jadeja. His spree of sixes and fours guided Chennai to victory. This just shows, the balance CSK has in their team, and why they are one of the best teams in the IPL. CSK has managed to win or defeat their opponents by 10 wickets on 3 different occasions. Their biggest victory was against the Kings XI Punjab in 2013. Punjab posted a modest 138, which Chennai chased down in 17 overs, with both Murali Vijay and Micheal Hussey scoring half-centuries.
Mumbai Indians-2:
Very surprisingly, Mumbai Indians have achieved this feat only twice, but that does not take away that Mumbai is one of or probably is the best team in IPL. They have won the tournament a record 5 times, that feat itself speaks volumes. Mumbai’s first 10 wicket victory was against Rajasthan Royals in 2012, where Mumbai chased down Rajsthan’s 163, with the legend Sachin Tendulkar and Dwayne Smith scoring half-centuries. Mumbai’s last 10 wicket victory was against CSK in the 2020 edition of the IPL, where Mumbai had to chase a target of 116, which Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock easily achieved. Very interestingly, Mumbai has been at the receiving end of many 10 wicket victories, an insane 3 times.
Sunrisers Hyderabad-2:
Like Mumbai and Chennai, Sunrisers Hyderbad has also won by a 10 wicket margin twice the IPL. SRH, just like RCB have had some really destructive batsmen on their side. David Warner, Kane Williamson, Shikhar Dhawan. Even though David Warner wasn’t that successful in the last game, we have seen what this man can do. Sunriser’s 10 wicket victory was against Gujarat Lions in 2016 and Mumbai Indians in 2020. In both the games, as we would have expected, David Warner scored half-centuries. In the first game, he was supported by Shikhar Dhawan, and in the second game, he was backed by Wriddhiman Saha.
Delhi Capitals, Deccan Chargers, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders-1:
These are the teams that have enjoyed a 10 wicket victory once in their IPL journey.
I want to start off with Deccan Chargers because they achieved this feat in the inaugural edition of the IPL. The Deccan bowlers restricted Mumbai Indians to 154. The batting legends, Adam Gilchrist and VVS Laxman saw this as light work and finished the job in just 12 overs, with Gilchrist scoring a century. The inaugural edition of the IPL was one thrilling tournament, from the very first match, totally unexpected things were happening, no wonder we all love this tournament soo much.
Rajasthan Royals, similar to Mumbai have been on the receiving end quite a few times, but they also have enjoyed the sweet taste of a 10 wicket victory. Their big moment was against Mumbai in the 2011 edition of the tournament. Shane Watson and Rahul Dravid played masterful shots to set up Rajasthan’s maiden 10 wicket victory.
Delhi Capitals achieved this feat against the Kings XI Punjab or the Punjab Kings in the 2009 edition of the IPL. The match was cut short due to rain, and under the D/L method, Delhi only had to score 58 runs, which they did pretty easily, with Virender Sehwag smashing a quick 38 in just 16 balls.
Punjab Kings’s maiden 10 wicket victory was against Delhi Capitals. This was an extremely interesting match. The Punjab bowlers restricted Delhi to a measly 67. The Punjab batsmen had no issues changing down this low score, with Guptil and Amla playing wonderfully. Guptil even managed to score a half-century.
Last on the list, we have Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR also achieved this feat in the 2017 edition of the IPL, and it was against Gujarat Lions. Chris Lynn and Gautam Gambhir played superb knocks to guide KKR to victory. Lynn’s 93 and Gambhir’s 76 were enough to get KKR their first 10 wicket victory.
10 wicket victories are very interesting, most of the time as we have seen, it’s the batsmen who showcase their skills, but on some occasions, the bowlers have played their part as well. We already saw one 10 wicket victory this season, and it was extremely fun, so let’s hope for more.
